WHERE WILL YOU GO WHEN YOUR HEART IS FREE: COVER SONGS
This is a collection of “bedroom recordings” from my studio apartment in a small alley off the Kham Thien market in Hanoi, Vietnam. These songs are directly or obliquely about the estrangement, exoticism and romance of living in a foreign land.

WHERE WILL YOU GO WHEN YOUR HEART IS FREE consists of 10 original songs and 10 covers–songs by friends of mine, and by songwriters I love, such as Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Billy Bragg.
Some of these cover songs express how I feel about living in Hanoi. Others are more concretely related to my friends here–I included Cat Power’s song “Lived in Bars” because I often sing it with my friend Duc when I visit his bar, Tadioto, and there’s a Sinead O’Connor for the simple reason that she was the childhood hero of a girl I dated. I sang “Boots of Spanish Leather” for Kate and Tito before I left Seattle, and always feels like my farewell to America in reverse.
